Medium-hard, lead-free calcium-sodium borosilicate frit for clear glazes. Ferro described a glaze of the frit plus 10% kaolin as firing 1050-1100°C (Walker gives expansion 61 x10^-7). Walker reports that Ferro suggested US Frit 3124 as the closest replacement after 4131 was discontinued.
Walker Ceramics listed it until February 2020, but no longer by March 2021.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Ferro Frit 4131 as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Ferro Frit 4131 that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 57.5 | 3.166 |
| Al₂O₃ | 10.67 | 0.346 |
| B₂O₃ | 14.31 | 0.680 |
| CaO | 11.63 | 0.686 |
| Na₂O | 5.88 | 0.314 |
- Equivalent weight
- 330.84
- Fired weight
- 330.84
- Loss on ignition
- 0%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Ferro Frit 4131 that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: No SDS seen. Frit is a ground glass with no free crystalline silica; avoid breathing the fine dust.
Use it in a recipe
