Eckalite 2 Kaolin
A standard material in Glazecalc's library: its oxide analysis, unity contribution and hazards.
What it is
- Kind
- Clays
- Formula
- SiO₂ 47%, Al₂O₃ 37%, Fe₂O₃ 0.8%, TiO₂ 0.7%, Na₂O 0.3%, LOI 13.7%
- Also called
- Eckalite 2, Kaolin Eckalite 2, China Clay/Kaolin - Eckalite 2, Walker BA331
- Made by
- Green360 Technologies (formerly Suvo Minerals Australia; earlier Imerys Minerals Australia / ECC), Pittong, Victoria, Australia
- Sold in
- AU
- Similar materials
- Eckalite 1 Kaolin , China Clay , EPK Kaolin
- Source
- Walker Ceramics, Raw Materials - Typical Analyses (BA331 Eckalite 2 / 120)
A second Pittong kaolin grade, slightly more iron-bearing than Eckalite 1; sold to potters by Walker Ceramics (BA331, which replaced their Eckaglas), Northcote Pottery Supplies and Blackwattle Pottery. Used for glaze alumina, suspension and slips. Walker's figures are the ones it gave in 2007 for Eckaglas, the grade this replaced.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Eckalite 2 Kaolin as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Eckalite 2 Kaolin that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 47 | 161.610 |
| Al₂O₃ | 37 | 74.971 |
| Fe₂O₃ | 0.8 | 1.035 |
| TiO₂ | 0.7 | 1.811 |
| Na₂O | 0.3 | 1.000 |
- Equivalent weight
- 20,659.67
- Fired weight
- 17,829.29
- Loss on ignition
- 13.7%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Eckalite 2 Kaolin that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Kaolin; the related Eckalite 1 SDS (2024) gives quartz <1%. Avoid breathing the dust.
Use it in a recipe
