China Clay
A standard material in Glazecalc's library: its oxide analysis, unity contribution and hazards.
What it is
- Kind
- Clays
- Formula
- Al₂O₃•2SiO₂•2H₂O
- Also called
- Kaolin (theoretical)
- Source
- Theoretical formula
Theoretical kaolin, the ideal formula of clay. Real kaolins run 12–13.5% LOI and carry some iron, titania and alkali.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of China Clay as moles of each fired oxide per formula. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of China Clay that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
China Clay has no flux oxide, so its unity contribution is per formula as written.
| Oxide | Moles | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| Al₂O₃ | 1 | 1.000 |
| SiO₂ | 2 | 2.000 |
- Equivalent weight
- 258.17
- Fired weight
- 222.13
- Loss on ignition
- 13.96%
The equivalent weight is the grams of China Clay that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Not classified (CTM SDS 45/104); less than 1% respirable quartz; avoid breathing the dust.
Use it in a recipe
Add China Clay to a recipe in the Glazecalc calculator to see what it does to a glaze's unity formula.
