The Spanish 'national' kaolin that Spanish pottery shops (Prodesco, Marphil in Madrid) sell for glazes, engobes and high-fire bodies, as against imported English kaolin. Slightly more silica and less potash than Cornish or Breton kaolin.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Caolín Nacional Superfino (Prodesco) as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Caolín Nacional Superfino (Prodesco) that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 50.8 | 65.192 |
| Al₂O₃ | 34.9 | 26.392 |
| Fe₂O₃ | 0.7 | 0.338 |
| TiO₂ | 0.2 | 0.193 |
| K₂O | 0.5 | 0.409 |
| Na₂O | 0.1 | 0.124 |
| MgO | 0.1 | 0.191 |
| CaO | 0.2 | 0.275 |
- Equivalent weight
- 7710.54
- Fired weight
- 6746.73
- Loss on ignition
- 12.5%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Caolín Nacional Superfino (Prodesco) that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Kaolin dust; may contain some fine quartz. Avoid breathing the dust.
