White-firing Breton porcelain kaolin, sold to French potters as Kaolinor 1C (Ceradel) and to Spanish potters as Caolín d'Arvor (Prodesco). A plain, fairly pure kaolin for glazes, engobes and porcelain bodies.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Kaolinor 1C (Arvor kaolin) as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Kaolinor 1C (Arvor kaolin) that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 48.05 | 37.904 |
| Al₂O₃ | 36.94 | 17.172 |
| Fe₂O₃ | 0.8 | 0.237 |
| TiO₂ | 0.2 | 0.119 |
| K₂O | 1.2 | 0.604 |
| Na₂O | 0.1 | 0.076 |
| MgO | 0.2 | 0.235 |
| CaO | 0.1 | 0.085 |
- Equivalent weight
- 4739.67
- Fired weight
- 4151.47
- Loss on ignition
- 12.41%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Kaolinor 1C (Arvor kaolin) that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Ceradel's safety sheet (Dec 2024) lists it as 100% kaolin, not classified as hazardous; treat the dust like any clay dust.
Use it in a recipe
Add Kaolinor 1C (Arvor kaolin) to a recipe in the Glazecalc calculator to see what it does to a glaze's unity formula.
