A leadless, very low-expansion calcium-barium borosilicate frit (expansion 40 x 10^-7/K), high in silica and boron. Frits this low in expansion are added in small amounts to lower a glaze's expansion and cure crazing. On its own it is stiff (softening 910 °C, half-sphere point 1280 °C). Sold by Hans Wolbring (Höhr-Grenzhausen, Germany).
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Vibrantz Frit 90255 as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Vibrantz Frit 90255 that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 57.26 | 7.602 |
| Al₂O₃ | 10.23 | 0.800 |
| B₂O₃ | 21.82 | 2.500 |
| CaO | 4.92 | 0.700 |
| BaO | 5.77 | 0.300 |
- Equivalent weight
- 797.65
- Fired weight
- 797.65
- Loss on ignition
- 0%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Vibrantz Frit 90255 that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Leadless frit (glass, CAS 65997-18-4) with about 6% barium oxide and 22% boron oxide bound in the glass. No SDS was found for this product. Some EU suppliers label boron-rich frits as toxic to reproduction (H360FD), so check the SDS that comes with the bag. Avoid breathing the dust.
Use it in a recipe
