Low-expansion borax frit used to cut glaze expansion where crazing is a problem; above about 5% it can dull the surface. Expansion 3.8 x 10^-6/°C, firing range 1020-1150 °C.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Low Expansion Frit (Potterycrafts P2960) as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Low Expansion Frit (Potterycrafts P2960) that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 63.4 | 5.307 |
| B₂O₃ | 17.6 | 1.272 |
| MgO | 2.2 | 0.275 |
| Al₂O₃ | 8.5 | 0.419 |
| K₂O | 0.2 | 0.011 |
| CaO | 3.7 | 0.332 |
| Li₂O | 1.1 | 0.185 |
| ZnO | 3.2 | 0.198 |
- Equivalent weight
- 502.95
- Fired weight
- 502.95
- Loss on ignition
- 0%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Low Expansion Frit (Potterycrafts P2960) that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Not classified (Potterycrafts SDS P2960); breathing the dust over long periods raises the risk of lung disease.
