Alumina-free, lead-free sodium-calcium borosilicate frit for earthenware at 1040-1100°C (Walker; expansion 83 x10^-7). No supplier names a replacement. US Frit 3134 is the nearest one on sale, though it has more calcium and less sodium.
Walker Ceramics already listed it as no longer available in October 2016.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Ferro Frit 4171 as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Ferro Frit 4171 that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 54.71 | 2.263 |
| B₂O₃ | 21.52 | 0.768 |
| CaO | 11.1 | 0.492 |
| Na₂O | 12.67 | 0.508 |
- Equivalent weight
- 248.53
- Fired weight
- 248.53
- Loss on ignition
- 0%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Ferro Frit 4171 that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: No SDS seen. Frit is a ground glass with no free crystalline silica; avoid breathing the fine dust.
