Standard low-solubility lead bisilicate frit (about 65% lead oxide) for bright, glossy earthenware glazes at 950-1050°C (Walker; expansion 72 x10^-7). It is sold in Australia as 4064 or 3531 by Walker Ceramics, Keane Ceramics, NR Pottery Supplies, Ipswich Pottery Supplies and Blackwattle Pottery ('Frit 3531 (replaces 4064)').
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Ferro Frit 4064 (lead bisilicate) as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Ferro Frit 4064 (lead bisilicate) that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 32.11 | 1.744 |
| Al₂O₃ | 2 | 0.064 |
| Na₂O | 0.97 | 0.051 |
| PbO | 64.92 | 0.949 |
- Equivalent weight
- 326.25
- Fired weight
- 326.25
- Loss on ignition
- 0%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Ferro Frit 4064 (lead bisilicate) that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
This material contains lead oxide (PbO).
Hazards: LEAD FRIT: about 65% lead oxide, held in glass. Lead compounds are toxic if swallowed or inhaled, can harm fertility and the unborn child, and damage organs with repeated exposure. Avoid all dust, wear a P2/P3 respirator, wash after use, and keep it away from food areas and children. Glazes made with it must be correctly formulated and fired, and lead release from functional ware should be tested by a laboratory.
Use it in a recipe
Add Ferro Frit 4064 (lead bisilicate) to a recipe in the Glazecalc calculator to see what it does to a glaze's unity formula.
