Standard lead bisilicate frit (PbO·2SiO2 with a little alumina) for low-fired earthenware and majolica glazes; it is the Dutch counterpart of UK lead bisilicate. Sold by Cock Keramiek, Ve-Ka (as 3647) and De Beeldhouwwinkel (Keramikos 10.05).

Oxide analysis and unity formula

Glazecalc has the analysis of Lead Bisilicate Frit 10.05 (Keramikos) as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Lead Bisilicate Frit 10.05 (Keramikos) that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.

Oxides in Lead Bisilicate Frit 10.05 (Keramikos)
Oxide Weight % Unity contribution
SiO₂33.81.940
Al₂O₃1.480.050
PbO64.721.000
Equivalent weight
344.87
Fired weight
344.87
Loss on ignition
0%

The equivalent weight is the grams of Lead Bisilicate Frit 10.05 (Keramikos) that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.

Hazards and safety

This material contains lead oxide (PbO).

Hazards: CONTAINS LEAD (PbO about 65%). Cock Keramiek marks it 'Gevaarlijke stof'. Lead frits are classified in the EU as Repr. 1A and STOT RE 1. Reimbold & Strick's SDS for its lead frit A 1316 P lists: H302+H332 (harmful if swallowed or inhaled), H351 (suspected of causing cancer), H360Df (may damage the unborn child; suspected of damaging fertility), H372 (damages organs through prolonged exposure) and H410 (very toxic to aquatic life). Use it only with dust control, gloves and good hygiene, and keep it away from children and food areas. Lab-test any glaze made with it for lead release before it is used on food or drink surfaces.

Glazecalc shows the hazard wording as its record gives it. It is not a full risk assessment, so read the safety data sheet from your supplier. Before you handle any glaze material, read Safe mixing and ventilation and Glaze safety at home.
