A zinc-barium silicate frit with no boron, used for satin-matte and matte glazes and as a less soluble way to add barium and zinc. Expansion is about 103-105 x 10^-7/K; it starts to soften at 835 °C and reaches the half-sphere point at 990 °C. Sold by BSZ, Hans Wolbring and keramikbedarf-online.de.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Vibrantz Frit 90420 as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Vibrantz Frit 90420 that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 41.29 | 1.333 |
| Al₂O₃ | 2.79 | 0.053 |
| BaO | 35 | 0.443 |
| ZnO | 19.34 | 0.461 |
| Li₂O | 1.4 | 0.091 |
| K₂O | 0.1 | 0.002 |
| Na₂O | 0.1 | 0.003 |
- Equivalent weight
- 194
- Fired weight
- 194
- Loss on ignition
- 0%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Vibrantz Frit 90420 that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Leadless, but it contains about 35% barium oxide and 19% zinc oxide bound in glass. No SDS was found. Barium in a frit is much less soluble than barium carbonate, but test any barium glaze for leaching before it is used on food surfaces. Avoid breathing the dust.
Use it in a recipe
