Vibrantz Frit 90158
A standard material in Glazecalc's library: its oxide analysis, unity contribution and hazards.
What it is
- Kind
- Frits
- Formula
- Na₂O•2B₂O₃•3SiO₂
- Also called
- Ferro Fritte 90158, Degussa Fritte 90158, D 90158, Natriumborsilikatfritte D 90158, Natriumborsilikat 90158
- Made by
- Vibrantz GmbH, Frankfurt am Main, Germany (formerly Ferro GmbH; the 90xxx numbers date from Degussa)
- Sold in
- EU
- Source
- BSZ Keramikbedarf, product page 'Natriumborsilikatfritte D 90158' (Seger formula; names Vibrantz GmbH as maker)
A sodium borosilicate frit with no alumina. It is a strong low-temperature flux and boron source. BSZ sells it for leadless alkaline glazes, especially raku, and it also appears in crystalline-glaze recipes. Expansion is 85 x 10^-7/K; it starts to soften at 685 °C and reaches the half-sphere point at 780 °C.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Vibrantz Frit 90158 as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Vibrantz Frit 90158 that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 47.25 | 2.999 |
| B₂O₃ | 36.5 | 2.000 |
| Na₂O | 16.25 | 1.000 |
- Equivalent weight
- 381.41
- Fired weight
- 381.41
- Loss on ignition
- 0%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Vibrantz Frit 90158 that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Leadless frit (glass, CAS 65997-18-4) with a lot of boron. No SDS was found for this product. Some EU suppliers label boron-rich frits as toxic to reproduction (H360FD), so check the SDS that comes with the bag. Avoid breathing the dust.
Use it in a recipe
