- Digitalfire Reference Library: Tile #6 Kaolin (from the producer's data sheet dated Jan 2013) (2013-01)
An air-floated Georgia kaolin and the most plastic kaolin commonly sold in North America. It helps suspend glazes but is not thixotropic like EPK, and its TiO2 (1.4%) makes it fire less white than EPK.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Tile #6 Kaolin as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Tile #6 Kaolin that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 45.5 | 44.842 |
| Al₂O₃ | 38.1 | 22.127 |
| Fe₂O₃ | 0.5 | 0.185 |
| TiO₂ | 1.4 | 1.038 |
| CaO | 0.3 | 0.317 |
| MgO | 0.4 | 0.588 |
| Na₂O | 0.1 | 0.096 |
- Equivalent weight
- 5921.43
- Fired weight
- 5122.04
- Loss on ignition
- 13.5%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Tile #6 Kaolin that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Contains crystalline silica (quartz); do not breathe the dust.
Use it in a recipe
