Spodumene (theoretical)
A standard material in Glazecalc's library: its oxide analysis, unity contribution and hazards.
What it is
- Kind
- Feldspars and stones
- Formula
- Li₂O•Al₂O₃•4SiO₂
- Similar materials
- Spodumene (Laguna)
- Source
- Theoretical formula
The ideal mineral, Li₂O•Al₂O₃•4SiO₂, with 8.0% Li₂O. Commercial grades carry less lithium, about 7.1–7.65% Li₂O, with some iron, potash and phosphorus; use the supplier’s analysis when you have it.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Spodumene (theoretical) as moles of each fired oxide per formula. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Spodumene (theoretical) that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Moles | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| Li₂O | 1 | 1.000 |
| Al₂O₃ | 1 | 1.000 |
| SiO₂ | 4 | 4.000 |
- Equivalent weight
- 372.17
- Fired weight
- 372.17
- Loss on ignition
- 0%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Spodumene (theoretical) that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Not classified (Potterycrafts SDS P3357); contains 4–6% quartz; avoid breathing the dust.
Use it in a recipe
Add Spodumene (theoretical) to a recipe in the Glazecalc calculator to see what it does to a glaze's unity formula.
