Silica
A standard material in Glazecalc's library: its oxide analysis, unity contribution and hazards.
What it is
- Kind
- Silica
- Formula
- SiO₂
- Also called
- Quartz
- Source
- Theoretical formula
Dust hazard from free silica particles.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Silica as moles of each fired oxide per formula. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Silica that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
Silica has no flux oxide, so its unity contribution is per formula as written.
| Oxide | Moles | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 1 | 1.000 |
- Equivalent weight
- 60.08
- Fired weight
- 60.08
- Loss on ignition
- 0%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Silica that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Danger (CTM silica flour SDS 53): H372 damages the lungs through repeated inhalation; over 10% respirable quartz; avoid breathing the dust.
Use it in a recipe
Add Silica to a recipe in the Glazecalc calculator to see what it does to a glaze's unity formula.
