A red-burning, iron-rich Ohio earthenware clay, air-floated to 200 mesh. In glazes it is a source of iron (about 7% Fe2O3) and alkali, used up to 60% in some brown and slip-type glazes.

Oxide analysis and unity formula

Glazecalc has the analysis of Redart as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Redart that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.

Oxides in Redart
Oxide Weight % Unity contribution
Al₂O₃16.41.725
SiO₂64.211.459
Fe₂O₃70.470
TiO₂1.10.148
MgO1.60.426
CaO0.20.038
Na₂O0.40.069
K₂O4.10.467
Equivalent weight
1072.44
Fired weight
1018.82
Loss on ignition
5%

The equivalent weight is the grams of Redart that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.

Hazards and safety

Hazards: Contains crystalline silica (quartz); do not breathe the dust.

Glazecalc shows the hazard wording as its record gives it. It is not a full risk assessment, so read the safety data sheet from your supplier. Before you handle any glaze material, read Safe mixing and ventilation and Glaze safety at home.

Use it in a recipe

Add Redart to a recipe in the Glazecalc calculator to see what it does to a glaze's unity formula.
