Nepheline Syenite (Norwegian, UK)
A standard material in Glazecalc's library: its oxide analysis, unity contribution and hazards.
What it is
- Kind
- Feldspars and stones
- Formula
- SiO₂ 55.4%, Al₂O₃ 24.6%, Na₂O 8.1%, K₂O 8.8%, CaO 1.1%, TiO₂ 0.07%, Fe₂O₃ 0.1%
- Also called
- North Cape Nepheline Syenite, Sibelco Nepheline N45, Sibelco Nepheline N75, Potterycrafts P3332, Valentine FL007, CTM Nepheline Syenite
- Made by
- Sibelco (Norway)
- Sold in
- UK, EU
- Source
- Sibelco ceramics product selector, nepheline syenite (N45 PO / N75 PO, origin Norway) (2021-06)
The nepheline syenite sold in the UK is Norwegian, with about equal K2O and Na2O. US recipes assume Canadian A270 (K2O 4.8, Na2O 10.5), so the two are not interchangeable without recalculating.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Nepheline Syenite (Norwegian, UK) as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Nepheline Syenite (Norwegian, UK) that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 55.4 | 3.783 |
| Al₂O₃ | 24.6 | 0.990 |
| Na₂O | 8.1 | 0.536 |
| K₂O | 8.8 | 0.383 |
| CaO | 1.1 | 0.080 |
| TiO₂ | 0.07 | 0.004 |
| Fe₂O₃ | 0.1 | 0.003 |
- Equivalent weight
- 410.29
- Fired weight
- 410.29
- Loss on ignition
- 0%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Nepheline Syenite (Norwegian, UK) that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Fine dust; low in free silica but avoid breathing it.
Use it in a recipe
