A calcium borate frit with very little silica, used as a concentrated source of boron and calcium. German suppliers sell it as a replacement for colemanite and Portabor that avoids their thickening of the slurry and their spitting in the kiln. Expansion is 76.2 x 10^-7/K, with softening at 670 °C. Sold by keramikbedarf-online.de and Rantzauer Töpferbedarf.

Oxide analysis and unity formula

Glazecalc has the analysis of Mondré & Manz Calcium Borate Frit M 9152 as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Mondré & Manz Calcium Borate Frit M 9152 that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.

The equivalent weight is the grams of Mondré & Manz Calcium Borate Frit M 9152 that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.

Hazards and safety

Hazards: Leadless frit (glass, CAS 65997-18-4) with a lot of boron. No SDS was found for this product. Some EU suppliers label boron-rich frits as toxic to reproduction (H360FD), so check the SDS that comes with the bag. Avoid breathing the dust.

Glazecalc shows the hazard wording as its record gives it. It is not a full risk assessment, so read the safety data sheet from your supplier. Before you handle any glaze material, read Safe mixing and ventilation and Glaze safety at home.
