Minspar 200
A standard material in Glazecalc's library: its oxide analysis, unity contribution and hazards.
What it is
- Kind
- Feldspars and stones
- Formula
- SiO₂ 68.6%, Al₂O₃ 18.5%, Fe₂O₃ 0.06%, K₂O 4.1%, Na₂O 6.5%, CaO 1.5%, LOI 0.3%
- Also called
- Minspar, Minspar-200, Minspar 200 Soda Feldspar, NC-4 Feldspar (former name), Soda Feldspar (Minspar)
- Made by
- The Quartz Corp USA, Spruce Pine, North Carolina (named as manufacturer on Laguna's SDS, revised 2024-02-23; earlier sold and distributed by Imerys Ceramics)
- Sold in
- US
- Replaces
- Kona F-4 Feldspar
- Source
- Sheffield Pottery product page 'Minspar 200' (supplier typical analysis; same figures as The Quartz Corp/Imerys TDS values quoted elsewhere)
200-mesh flotation-grade soda feldspar from Spruce Pine, NC, formerly called NC-4. It is the standard US replacement for Kona F-4.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Minspar 200 as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Minspar 200 that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 68.6 | 6.519 |
| Al₂O₃ | 18.5 | 1.036 |
| Fe₂O₃ | 0.06 | 0.002 |
| K₂O | 4.1 | 0.249 |
| Na₂O | 6.5 | 0.599 |
| CaO | 1.5 | 0.153 |
- Equivalent weight
- 570.94
- Fired weight
- 569.23
- Loss on ignition
- 0.3%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Minspar 200 that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Contains crystalline silica (about 10% quartz per the SDS); avoid breathing the dust.
Use it in a recipe
Add Minspar 200 to a recipe in the Glazecalc calculator to see what it does to a glaze's unity formula.
