Lead monosilicate frit (one PbO to one SiO2), the most lead-rich standard frit. It is a very strong low-temperature flux for earthenware and raku glazes. Expansion is about 89-90 x 10^-7/K, with softening at about 450-470 °C. Sold to potters by Ve-Ka (Netherlands, as 2994). Ing. Lehrer (Austria) publishes the 2019 SDS for R&S A 1316 P.

Oxide analysis and unity formula

Glazecalc has the analysis of Lead Monosilicate Frit (R&S A 1316 / M&M M 70) as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Lead Monosilicate Frit (R&S A 1316 / M&M M 70) that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.

Oxides in Lead Monosilicate Frit (R&S A 1316 / M&M M 70)
Oxide Weight % Unity contribution
SiO₂210.987
PbO791.000
Equivalent weight
282.53
Fired weight
282.53
Loss on ignition
0%

The equivalent weight is the grams of Lead Monosilicate Frit (R&S A 1316 / M&M M 70) that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.

Hazards and safety

This material contains lead oxide (PbO).

Hazards: CONTAINS LEAD (PbO about 79%). Reimbold & Strick's SDS for A 1316 P (rev. 1.07, 2019) classifies it as Repr. 1A and STOT RE 1: H302+H332 (harmful if swallowed or inhaled), H351 (suspected of causing cancer), H360Df (may damage the unborn child; suspected of damaging fertility), H372 (damages organs through prolonged exposure) and H410 (very toxic to aquatic life). Use it only with dust control, gloves and good hygiene. Lab-test any glaze made with it for lead release before it is used on food or drink surfaces.

Glazecalc shows the hazard wording as its record gives it. It is not a full risk assessment, so read the safety data sheet from your supplier. Before you handle any glaze material, read Safe mixing and ventilation and Glaze safety at home.

Use it in a recipe

Add Lead Monosilicate Frit (R&S A 1316 / M&M M 70) to a recipe in the Glazecalc calculator to see what it does to a glaze's unity formula.
