A light-firing, kaolinitic Westerwald clay (46% kaolinite, 18% mica, 25% quartz) from one of the main German clay miners, sold as milled clay powder. Its analysis and fineness are close to an English ball clay such as TWVA (about 28% alumina, 11.6% LOI), so it can stand in for one in glazes and engobes.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Goerg & Schneider Ton 3616 as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Goerg & Schneider Ton 3616 that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 54.37 | 27.853 |
| Al₂O₃ | 28.11 | 8.486 |
| TiO₂ | 1.41 | 0.543 |
| Fe₂O₃ | 1.33 | 0.256 |
| CaO | 0.18 | 0.099 |
| MgO | 0.35 | 0.267 |
| K₂O | 1.94 | 0.634 |
- Equivalent weight
- 3077.92
- Fired weight
- 2720.88
- Loss on ignition
- 11.6%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Goerg & Schneider Ton 3616 that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Contains crystalline silica (about 25% quartz by the maker's mineral analysis); avoid breathing the dust.
