Lead-free calcium borosilicate frit, Ferro Australia's version of US Frit 3124 but with less alumina. It is a common base for earthenware glazes, including clear glazes over underglaze, at 1040-1100°C (Walker; expansion 74 x10^-7). Australian and NZ suppliers now sell US Ferro 3124 as its replacement; 3124 has more alumina, so a recipe written for 4124 may need a little less kaolin.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Ferro Frit 4124 as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Ferro Frit 4124 that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| SiO₂ | 57.56 | 2.571 |
| Al₂O₃ | 5.97 | 0.157 |
| B₂O₃ | 14.43 | 0.556 |
| CaO | 14.15 | 0.677 |
| K₂O | 1.26 | 0.036 |
| Na₂O | 6.63 | 0.287 |
- Equivalent weight
- 268.33
- Fired weight
- 268.33
- Loss on ignition
- 0%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Ferro Frit 4124 that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: No SDS seen. Frit is a ground glass with no free crystalline silica; avoid breathing the fine dust.
