Oxide analysis and unity formula

Glazecalc has the analysis of Cryolite as moles of each fired oxide per formula. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Cryolite that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.

Oxides in Cryolite
Oxide Moles Unity contribution
Na₂O31.000
Al₂O₃10.333
Equivalent weight
139.95
Fired weight
95.97
Loss on ignition
31.43%

The equivalent weight is the grams of Cryolite that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.

Hazards and safety

Hazards: Danger (Fluorsid synthetic cryolite SDS): H332 harmful if inhaled; H362 may harm breast-fed children; H372 damages lungs and bones (skeletal fluorosis) through repeated exposure; H411 toxic to aquatic life; releases fluorine in firing, so ventilate the kiln.

Glazecalc shows the hazard wording as its record gives it. It is not a full risk assessment, so read the safety data sheet from your supplier. Before you handle any glaze material, read Safe mixing and ventilation and Glaze safety at home.

Use it in a recipe

Add Cryolite to a recipe in the Glazecalc calculator to see what it does to a glaze's unity formula.
