Colemanite (theoretical)
A standard material in Glazecalc's library: its oxide analysis, unity contribution and hazards.
What it is
- Kind
- Boron sources
- Formula
- 2CaO•3B₂O₃•5H₂O
- Similar materials
- Colemanite (commercial) , Gillespie Borate , Calcium Borate Frit (Potterycrafts P2954) , Calcium Borate Frit (Potclays 2268)
- Source
- Theoretical formula
The ideal mineral, 2CaO•3B₂O₃•5H₂O, with 50.8% B₂O₃. Real colemanite has less boron, about 40%: see Colemanite (commercial). Not the same as the calcium borate frit in UK recipes.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Colemanite (theoretical) as moles of each fired oxide per formula. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Colemanite (theoretical) that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Moles | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| B₂O₃ | 1.5 | 1.500 |
| CaO | 1 | 1.000 |
- Equivalent weight
- 205.54
- Fired weight
- 160.5
- Loss on ignition
- 21.91%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Colemanite (theoretical) that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Not classified (Etimine SDS); may irritate the eyes; avoid breathing the dust.
Use it in a recipe
Add Colemanite (theoretical) to a recipe in the Glazecalc calculator to see what it does to a glaze's unity formula.
