Calcined Alumina
A standard material in Glazecalc's library: its oxide analysis, unity contribution and hazards.
What it is
- Kind
- Alumina
- Formula
- Al₂O₃
- Also called
- Alumina, Aluminum oxide, Aluminium oxide, Alumina oxide (calcined), Alumina calcined, AC-2-325
- Made by
- AluChem Inc. (Cincinnati, Ohio) for the cited AC-2-325 grade
- Sold in
- US, UK, EU, AU
- Similar materials
- Alumina Hydrate
- Source
- AluChem, 'Calcined Alumina (Ground)' product data sheet, typical chemical composition, grade AC-2-325 (2016-10)
Calcined aluminum oxide ground to -325 mesh; very refractory (melts about 2040 C), used for matting and stiffening glazes and in kiln wash. Only very fine grades dissolve fully in a glaze.
Oxide analysis and unity formula
Glazecalc has the analysis of Calcined Alumina as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Calcined Alumina that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.
| Oxide | Weight % | Unity contribution |
|---|---|---|
| Al₂O₃ | 99.5 | 134.407 |
| SiO₂ | 0.02 | 0.046 |
| Fe₂O₃ | 0.02 | 0.017 |
| Na₂O | 0.45 | 1.000 |
- Equivalent weight
- 13,773.11
- Fired weight
- 13,753.83
- Loss on ignition
- 0.14%
The equivalent weight is the grams of Calcined Alumina that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.
Hazards and safety
Hazards: Low hazard nuisance dust; avoid breathing it.
Use it in a recipe
Add Calcined Alumina to a recipe in the Glazecalc calculator to see what it does to a glaze's unity formula.
