Dry-milled, very plastic secondary clay from Claypro's own pit at Axedale, Victoria; the Australian ball clay sold to potters as CA1 (Northcote) and CA2 (Walker, Blackwattle). Used for plasticity in bodies and for suspension, silica and alumina in glazes.

Oxide analysis and unity formula

Glazecalc has the analysis of Ball Clay CA1 / CA2 (Claypro, Axedale) as weight percent of the raw material. The unity contribution is the moles of each oxide in the amount of Ball Clay CA1 / CA2 (Claypro, Axedale) that holds 1.0 mole of flux, which is how Glazecalc adds it into a recipe's unity formula.

Oxides in Ball Clay CA1 / CA2 (Claypro, Axedale)
Oxide Weight % Unity contribution
SiO₂5917.280
Al₂O₃25.44.384
Fe₂O₃1.090.120
TiO₂1.40.308
CaO0.010.003
MgO0.850.371
K₂O30.560
Na₂O0.230.065
Equivalent weight
1759.7
Fired weight
1611.89
Loss on ignition
8.4%

The equivalent weight is the grams of Ball Clay CA1 / CA2 (Claypro, Axedale) that hold 1.0 mole of flux. The fired weight is what is left of that after firing.

Hazards and safety

Hazards: Claypro SDS (2015): about 20% crystalline silica (quartz); classified Carcinogen Category 1A (H350, by inhalation). Avoid breathing the dust.

Glazecalc shows the hazard wording as its record gives it. It is not a full risk assessment, so read the safety data sheet from your supplier. Before you handle any glaze material, read Safe mixing and ventilation and Glaze safety at home.

Use it in a recipe
